English version
Since I’ve been doing a lot of the driving and had forgotten to recharge the batteries I haven’t been able to update my journal yesterday (Monday 5 September). Actually, it was a quiet day and not much to write about. We had a very short night, thanks to some yelling and ‘singing’ that was going on by some youth, either drunk or high on drugs. So we slept in and had a nice Sunday morning breakfast, not even realising it was Father’s Day! We decided against a walk through Emerald, because it was overcast and threatening with rain, so we drove to the gem fields instead. Sapphire and Rubyvale are within easy reach and since I felt fine again I drove the first bit. We encountered a bit of rain at first, but not too bad. We had morning tea in Sapphire (nr 332, S23 27 57, E147 43 13) and drove around a bit. Then we went on to Rubyvale for a bit more sightseeing and we stopped at one of the gem shops. Not that I needed anything, but I like window shopping. As could be expected, they’re real mining towns, roughly like Lightning Ridge, where you can stake your claim and go in search for gems. Of course, there is a tour through one of the mines and ‘washing’ for gems for the sake of tourists. We’ve done it before, so we skipped that bit and just had a bit of a sticky beak. Knowing they are real mining towns we shouldn’t have been surprised by the kind of dwellings we saw. They don’t deserve the name ‘houses’, because I am sure most of them didn’t adhere to council regulations or had never even had an original building plan. I didn’t want to embarrass the people, but it would have been great to get some pictures of some of the hovels. But then, that’s what a mining town like that is all about and that’s how they grew from nothing. Besides, there are people that don’t live there all year around and others that don’t care about personal belongings. They live only for one thing and that’s their dream: to find that elusive big one…
But, let’s not dwell on the mining towns. After this most interesting trip we returned to Emerald and went in search for a liquor shop (yes, we like our ‘drop’ from time to time) and stopped in the town centre for lunch, hoping that the clouds would disappear and we could go for a walk. Unfortunately that didn’t happen so we returned to the Botanical Gardens in the hope that we could take our ‘old’ spot again. We were lucky, only after a second drive by, when we saw a car leave. Frank went to say hello to our neighbour again, but he wasn’t very cordial and told him that he was distinctly unhappy about us driving past all the time. (Twice in all!!!) Okay, that’s his problem, not ours. We got our chairs and sat down under the awning in the late afternoon sun that had appeared in the sky. Even though it was hot and steamy I have managed to do some knitting and finished the front of a christening gown (in miniature).
Towards dinner time the clouds really started closing in again and a cold wind started blowing, so we disappeared inside. Just in time, because it started bucketing down and the sky was lit up from time to time. This lasted the whole night. After Stephen had rung Frank to wish him Happy Father’s Day and not until Kevin rang for the same reason Frank started to realise he was getting very wet. On closer inspection we discovered a serious leak over his bed! Never mind, we have managed to keep it dry with a bucket hanging from the curtain rods, so he could sleep without a problem. After we watched the DVD and after I had checked my email not much was left of my laptop battery, so I skipped updating my journal and went to bed with a good book and a glass of red.
